56% of people in my recent survey said they listen until the end when a candidate gives a lengthy answer.
But hereโs the problem: Thatโs not efficient.
Your most valuable resource in an interview? Time.
If youโve already assessed what you needed, cutting them off is the right thing to do. And it doesnโt have to be rude. Try this:
โ Politely interrupt: "Thank you for this reply, Iโll have to stop you here because thereโs more I want to hear from you, and we have limited time."
โ Set expectations early: At the start of the interview, say: "At times, I may ask you to move on to the next topic for time management."
โ Be fair to the candidate: Let them showcase their full range of skills instead of getting stuck on one question.
The best interviewers manage time kindly and assertivelyโbecause efficiency isnโt just good for you, itโs fair for them.
Whatโs your go-to phrase for keeping interviews on track?
